Total beginner
When people speak slowly and clearly, I understand basic words and phrases about me, my family, work and so on.
I communicate with simple sentences about basic things, such as buying a ticket. I ask a question and I understand the answers if it is simple. I read and understand a simple announcement, poster or notice. I can write a simple postcard and link or fill out a form.
Advanced beginner
I understand the most common vocabulary in the context of things that concern me such as family, work, shopping, my city.
I am familiar with the text of the advertisement, announcements, short messages, in the timetable. I make social contact, but it's hard for me to keep the conversation going.
I can write a simple letter, announcement, thank you note.
Approximately at the level of the English Cambridge KEY (KET) certificate.
Independent English user (B1, B2)
Intermediate
I understand the point of a television program or news about current events.
I can handle most situations where I need to speak and understand and that occur during travel or normal daily contact.
I can describe my experiences, plans and a simple story.
I can write simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
Approximately at the level of the English Cambridge Preliminary Certificate (PET)
Upper-Intermediate
I can understand longer lectures if the topic is close enough to me.
I understand most films in written language and I understand a book in its original form. I can have a normal conversation with native speakers, take an active part in discussions on familiar topics, explain and defend my views, albeit with grammatical errors.
I can write detailed text on topics I know, write a paper or report.
Approximately at the level of the English Cambridge First Certificate- English FCE certificate, BEC Vantage, IELTS levels 5-6, TOEFL 87-109.
Knowledge of English expert (C1, C2)
Advanced
I can understand extended speech even when it is not clearly structured and relationships are only indicated.
I read factual and literary texts, and I can appreciate the differences in their style.
I can express myself fluently and promptly without much obvious searching for expressions, I use language flexibly and effectively for social and professional purposes.
I can describe complex topics clearly and in detail, expand them on secondary topics, develop specific points and end my speech with an appropriate conclusion.

I have no difficulty understanding any kind of speech, whether live or broadcast.
